In 1968 Robert and Vivienne Ritchie planted Delatite's first vines at the base of Mount Buller in north-eastern Victoria. Since 2011 Vestey Foods (UK) has held majority ownership, with the Ritchies' son David running the business.
With views of snow clad mountains, Delatite's sub-alpine climate is ideal for varieties like Riesling, Gewürztraminer and Pinot Gris. Since the early 2000s they have biodynamically farmed their vineyards following Rudolf Steiner's principles, using biodynamic preparations instead of fertilizers, forgoing pesticides and herbicides, and harvesting according to the biodynamic calendar. Their winemaking aspires to reveal the character of the fruit, not the fingerprint of the winemaker.
Aromatic white wines are Delatite's speciality. Vivienne's Block Reserve Riesling, Deadman's Hill Gewürztraminer and Estate Pinot Gris are at the forefront. The sweet Late Harvest Riesling is also notable.
